'These are the kind of cleaning jobs that you can do while you're waiting around for food to cook and kettles to boil,' they say.

Here are the nine areas you're overlooking:

1. In between appliances – particularly between the cooker or fridge and your kitchen worktops.

2. The TV remote – especially if it's been sitting on the floor or you regularly eat food in front of the telly.

3. Fridge drawers and shelves – the salad drawer can get 'pretty nasty', they say.

4. The top of things – from light fixtures to cupboards and the mouldings around doors.

5. The washing machine – if you've been running your machine at low temperatures, it can easily become a breeding ground for bacteria.

6. Reusable shopping bags – they should go through the washing machine regularly to remove lingering food bacteria, apparently.
