However, despite the warnings, we just can't give it up – the average UK adult still consumes more than twice their recommended daily amount.

Part of this is because those pesky sugar cravings. As we all know, when they arise, they're incredibly intense and difficult to ignore.

But Australian dietician Lyndi Cohen claims they can be overcome with one simple trick...

'Sugar is an easy, fast source of energy,' she tole Daily Mail Australia. 'Your body is programmed to seek out easy calories.'

The best thing you can do to stop sugar cravings is have a whole bag of tricks you can use to deal with them If you have a candy bar then just eat one square and put the rest away or if you have a cookie then only eat half of it. 2. Combine sugary treat foods with healthy foods.

Broken down by the hour , the ultimate guide advises what to snack on between meals and even has some tricks to stave off a hankering for some chocolate. Right before lunch, around 12:30pm, taking a pill may help cut back on sugar cravings later in the day.

She believes that most people reach for those treats out of habit, not because they need them – as anyone who's found themselves mindlessly visiting the office vending machine at 3pm can understand.

But the upside to this means it's possible for those cravings to be overcome as quickly as they arise.

Next time you find a strong urge to eat that bar of chocolate, Lyndi advises trying the 'one hour trick'.

'Firstly, give yourself permission to have the treat. But wait an hour to eat it,' she says.

'If you still feel like having the treat after an hour, you can have it! Most often, you'll forget about the craving altogether.'

The trick helps you identify whether you actually want sugar, or if you're just doing it out of habit. We'll be giving it a try next time those cravings hit!
